If only communication were a recharge card


Background

This post was inspired by my Level 2 Project 2 Toast masters speech on the Dynamic Leadership pathway. The aim of the speech was to better understand my communication styles. I would love to share it with all of you here.

Introduction

When you witness a breakdown in a relationship, or at work then you know that there was first a communication breakdown.

I wish the solution were as simple as recharging your credits. However real life is not that simple. The solution is to use the appropriate communication style at the right time and place.

Four communication styles are available to help us here. These four communication styles are

  • Analytical
  • Initiating
  • Direct
  • Supportive

As we break down the bias, I would like to highlight four famous women who embody these communication styles perfectly.

Communication styles

Analytical communication

The first communication style is the analytical communication style.

If only communication was a recharge card away, then I would wish to be as analytical as Nancy Drew. An analytical communicator such as Nancy Drew aims to break down an issue and get to the heart of the matter. She is logical, and precise with questions and the direction of the conversation.

Myself, I use this communication style when I help my colleagues troubleshoot, fix an escaped defect, and propose a solution to a business request which fulfills their needs

Initiating communication

The second comm style is the Initiating communication style.

If only communication were a recharge card away, then it would wish to initiate conversation as effortlessly as Oprah Winfrey, the queen of talk shows. Initiators like Oprah are self-assured and persuasive. She always leads the conversation.

I am most likely to employ this when I want to make new friends, open networking opportunities, and break the ice.

Direct communication

The third communication style is direct communication.

If only communication was a recharge card away, then I would wish to be as direct as Margaret Thatcher, the Iron lady. Direct communicators do not beat around the bush. Outwardly they are strong-willed and demanding. This can be especially witnessed with our elders and superiors at work.

I usually use this when I want to leave no doubt as to the message I am trying to convey.

Supportive communication

The final and by no means the least communication style is the supportive communication style.

If only communication was a recharge card away, then I would wish to have a supportive tone as Mother Theresa. Supportive communicators like Mother Theresa show empathy. They are calm and approachable.

I employ this style whenever I put myself in the shoes of those I am speaking with. With this communication style, I pay more attention to listening than I do speaking.

Conclusion

Sadly, communication is not a recharge card.

Communication is about being mindful of when and how we express our viewpoints to our loved ones and work colleagues. Hence no better communication style is better than another. They each have their strengths.

I hope I have given you something to consider. And with that this blog post as much as I enjoyed writing it.
